MUMBAI: Now, find a public parking lot (PPL) anywhere in the city by downloading the ‘MCGM 24×7’ app on your mobile phone.
The app lists all PPLs in the city that are managed by the BMC as well as BEST.
The parking locator function on the app is a joint initiative of the BMC and the Mumbai Parking Authority (MPA).
Currently, the city has 26 PPLs with a capacity for more than 20,000 vehicles, including two-, three- and four-wheelers and heavy motor vehicles. Of late, 24 bus depots and 37 bus terminals can be used to park buses.
On August 2, BEST opened up 24 bus depots across the city with 3,000 parking lots for tourist and school buses, especially during day hours between 8am and 8pm.
The authorities said BEST buses are mostly out on the streets during these hours and the vacant depots can be used to park tourist buses that come into the city. This would help free up road space and also allow for faster movement of vehicles. A parked bus is said to occupy 45 square metres.
Since July 7, the BMC has begun to impose heavy fine for parking within a 500m radius of a PPL. Penalty levied on motorists for illegal parking ranges from Rs 5,000 to Rs 23,250. The BMC’s PPLs are located at various areas across the city, including Parel, Dadar and Goregaon, among others.
Motorists can download the mobile app ‘MCGM 24×7’ and click on the ‘Smart Parking’ icon on the homepage to find all information regarding parking lots. Details range from addresses to parking timings, types of vehicles allowed and whether it is a paid space or free. The app also lists rates according to the vehicle type.
A senior BMC official said, “Searching for a parking spot on a busy street often takes a lot of time for vehicle users. This makes them circle around the block, which adds to congestion. The parking locator has been introduced keeping this concern of citizens in mind.”
The app also has the BMC’s parking circular with penalty details.
