ARAI to carry out fire audit of PMPML vehicles soon, Auto News, ET Auto

PUNE: The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) has agreed to conduct fire audit of the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML)buses.

“The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) had approached us for the audit and we have accepted their request. We will soon meet PMPML authorities and the bus manufacturers for more details before we start the audit,” ARAI director Rashmi Urdhawareshe told TOI.

“It is too early to say when the audit will start. We need to know the number of buses that need to go through the audit process,” she said.

Twenty PMPML buses caught fire since 2016 and seven of the blazes were in 2018 alone. The PMPML had kept the option open to approach a foreign agency if ARAI rejected their audit proposal.

The Central Institute of Road Transport had in the past rejected the transport utility’s proposal to conduct fire audit of the buses on the ground of lack of expertise.

The Regional Transport Office has told PMPML to ensure proper maintenance of its buses. The PMPML has in its fleet 565 CNG buses and 663 vehicles that run on diesel. Besides, private contractors run 653 buses on the PMPML’s behalf.

“The private contractors are supposed to take care of their own buses. The audit is meant for the PMPML’s buses,” a PMPML official.
